The drone is small enough to literally fit in to any backpack and even fits in your pocket.

The rotor arms and propellers fold in neatly on themselves and take the shape of a nifty little rectangle brick that is easy to carry and extremely portable. The propellers remain attached at all times and all one needs to do to start using this device is take out the arms and calibrate it with the controller. For the actual drone material itself, the drone is built using a high grade metal and there is almost nothing plastic about it. It has a solid and sturdy feel to it that is not only reassuring but imbues the user with a strong confidence when flying.

2. Flight Time & Battery:-
The Mavic Pro delivers an amazing 27 minutes of flight time which is mighty impressive given its compact size and built. Similar to the battery on the Phantom 4, it uses an intelligent flight battery that indicates how much juice is left to squeeze and how much battery life it’ll take to return home from the drone’s current location.

The Mavic comes with a 50W charger that takes roughly 70-80 minutes to fully charge a dead battery. So far, it’s neck and neck with the Phantom 4, except that it lags behind on the charging time by a few minutes.

3. Performance:-

The label says it can fly at a max speed of 40 mph, but we’d beg to differ since we clocked in speeds that were slightly higher (over 50 mph) on some occasions. Another aspect in which the Mavic excels is on range. As a result of its powerful rotors and the all new OcuSync video transmission technology, the Mavic is capable of reaching distances of 4.3mi (7 km) while providing a steady live video (HD) feed from the on board camera to the controller. Now, while this range might be a little exaggerated, from our experience, you can comfortably take this drone out to 13000 ft (approx 4 km) with no problem.

However, if you like living on the edge and want to test this drones range, you can without worrying, since the ‘return home’ function will automatically bring it back without a scratch as it did for us on a few occasion where our pilot panicked. Although the Mavic is solid enough to withstand a couple crashed on soft grass, it won’t survive a head on collision at high speed into a building or the tarmac. You don’t need to worry though, because it comes equipped with flight autonomy technology that is a one of a kind obstacle detection system that can detect any object up to 49ft (15m) away. In the event that it does encounter an obstacle in its path, at best it will evade or it will brake to a hover to avoid a collision.

4. Camera & Gimbal:-
The camera and gimbal on the Mavic Pro are the smallest that DJI has created so far. Having said that, don’t let their size fool you. The camera can shoot 4K Ultra HD video at 30fps (1080p at 96fps) and take 12MP stills just as well as the bigger Phantom 4. However, one major difference between this camera and the one on the 4, is the field of view, which is slightly smaller on the Mavic at 79 degrees. While this does affect the angle of the shot, the picture quality is not compromised in any way. The other drawback of the Mavic’s camera is the absence of a fixed focus.

Instead, the user has to tap to focus on an object. The gimbal is a 3-axis device which is quite adept at stabilizing the camera even at high-speeds. Even the fact that this portable and compact drone has a gimbal is quite an achievement in and of itself. Also, in keeping with its bigger cousin, the Mavic sports ActiveTrack (Object tracking technology) that employs image recognition to identify obstacles and follows the user. It also features optical and vision sensors as we mentioned before that prevent the drone from crashing into the floor in an indoor setting. Additionally, for selfie lovers, there is a gesture recognition software which responds to hand movements that get it to focus on the person and snap his/her photo.

5. Controller:-
The controller is equally compact and neat as the drone itself. Honestly, it looks like something that fell through to our dimension from an open time portal in the sky. Unlike the DJI 4 controller that has an odd holder for the phone jutting out from its surface, the Mavic controller offers a cool solution where your phone attaches just below it, so you get a good view of the LCD on the controller and the phone simultaneously.

The LCD display shows you important flight metrics, and telemetry data and the live feed (720p) that you get via your phone can be used to navigate DJI’s app. Alternatively, you don’t have to use the controller at all, and you can simply switch to Wi-Fi mode by flicking a switch on the drone and use your phone instead. 1. Flight Time, Battery and Camera:-
Unlike most of its competitors that take super long to charge, the battery on the Syma X5C takes 90 minutes and delivers a flight time of 7-8 minutes depending on the degree of camera use. Although it isn’t the most convenient of charging times, with a set of extra batteries one can enjoy the robust performance that this tiny quadcopter provides without frustration. Although the camera doesn’t come close to those on higher level camera drones, it certainly does the job. It’s a 2MP camera that can capture video at 720p which is pretty darn good considering the price tag on this drone.

During hovering and at a slower speed the drone takes good aerial photography and video, but we tried to capture stuff during more aggressive flying (such as banking), and the entire drone wobbled delivering extremely poor quality photo and video capture. We’d say that the camera is more than sufficient for taking videos and images of your kids playing around or of your neighborhood. Also, it comes with a 2GB memory card for storage. To power on the camera, hold down the button on the right shoulder of the controller for 5 seconds.

2. Performance:-
The 6-axis gyro stabilization system offers decent in flight stability, but owing to the light weight build of this copter, more than mild winds send it wobbling out of control. Also, also, we felt that the camera was probably a little too heavy for the drone and added to greater instability in flight. The drone performed pretty well overall at higher altitudes as well as lower altitudes but displayed below average range.

The X5C loses connection at about approximately 80ft (close to 30m) at which point it begins to fall and has to be rebound with the controller. While the package says ‘wind resistant,’ we found that in strong winds, it got blown around pretty easily. We couldn’t perform a smooth bank turn without the copter wobbling, but rudder turns were pretty easy to pull out. The button for eversions worked pretty well, and the copter can perform a couple solid 360 rolls in mild weather.

However, before you perform any flips, you should remove the entire camera fitting from underneath. Doing this converts the camera button to a flip button and allows for easier flipping with less weight. Despite its light weight, the X5C has a pretty sturdy build which can withstand some crashes without falling apart. The great thing is that if something breaks, Syma has made all spare parts available to the consumer at a convenient cost.

3. Performance:-
The controller has a pretty straight forward design, like most the controller we’ve covered so far. It has two sticks (left and right), a host of buttons to control various flight functions, a button for photo and video capture and an LCD screen that displays battery, signal strength and more. The transmitter operates at a 2.4GHz frequency and uses spread spectrum technology for an enhanced signal.

We found the controller to be extremely responsive to the slightest tweak in power or direction on the sticks. This does take some getting used to and considering that there is no headless mode, you will have to learn to get adept with the controls especially if the drone is facing you.

The DJI Phantom 3 comes with an upgraded battery with increased voltage that offers a slightly longer flight time when compared to its predecessors. During our trials using this drone in an outdoor setting, we recorded flight times ranging between 20-25 minutes depending on battery life and camera usage. Besides extra voltage, the intelligent battery on this drone also features LED lights and sensors that give you a real time read of the amount of power that remains on your battery.

In addition, this quadcopter regularly performs an analysis of its distance to you and the amount of battery it will require to get back home. Pretty neat, huh? This was great, since we always knew how much further we could go and when we had to pull back. Also, the new 100-watt charger that this drone comes with allows you to pretty much go from an empty battery to a fully charged one in under 35 minutes or maybe even less depending on the amount of charge left on the battery. This is a huge improvement from the previous situation that used to take a whole lot longer to charge. With a faster charger, you can enjoy hassle-free flying and charge any extra batteries in a short amount of time.

3. On-board Camera & Gimbal:-
The Camera on the DJI Phantom 3 is a stark improvement from the Phantom 2 and is a complete badass. For starters, it shoots video in 4K HD resolution that looks just amazing on a monitor capable of high definition. The camera itself has a 20mm lens with a max f2.8 aperture that is capable of extraordinary cinematic capture and is especially good in low light situations.

Unlike the GoPro 4, this camera doesn’t lend a fish eye feel at all because of its narrower view of 94 degrees, but rather regulates for distortion pretty well. Consequently, also what this does is make the video more cinematic and smooth. The camera offers four different frame rates for different types of shots, including 24, 25, 30 and 60 fps (frames per second). Obviously, you have the option of the maximum frame rate of 4k at 30fps, but if you want a more cinematic feel, you also have the option of recording at 24fps or even 25fps. Also, you can also shoot HD in 720p or 1080p at 60fps which is good for recording slower video, but in this department, it falls short of the GoPro that shoot at four times the fps of this camera. Another area of improvement that this camera showcases over and above the previous Phantom 2 cam is with regards to its image capture bit rate which is at 60mbps.

Although this is a stark upgrade from 12mpbs, it’s still not ideal for 4k resolution. Although outwardly things may look similar to the Phantom 2, upon taking a closer look, one can see some major differences. For starters, it is endowed with much greater propulsion power, and its rotors have unique sensors underneath them that guide the aircraft and give it greater flight autonomy reducing the work of the pilot.

Two sets of sensors, including Optical Flow sensors and Ultrasound sensors, work together to identify different patterns on the ground and measure the drones distance to the ground at all times. These real-time calculations help steer the drone and enhance its hovering capabilities which allow for greater aerial photography. Also, if you let go of the controls, in-built air braking, stops the drone and makes it hover in place at a moment’s notice. Not only is this best professional drone fairly simple and easy to fly, but it gives you a great range of 2km. At longer distances when you can’t see the drone, you can view the drone on your phone via the DJI app, which is a pretty neat feature which we’ll get to in a minute.

Now, while this DJI 3 Pro does have a vision positioning system to prevent you from hitting the ground, it doesn’t serve as a robust collision avoidance system. So, you have to pay attention while flying to avoid trees, building, and other such objects. With this drone, you also get access to several intelligent flight modes including a return home, home lock, course lock, follow me and waypoints. Return home guides the drone back to the point of take off that it remembers via GPS. Home lock and course lock modes both influence the drone’s orientation; home lock mode locks the drone’s movement on its take-off direction. While course locks the drone’s movement about its present nose/tail orientation so that when you tip the right stick forward, it always moves forward in that direction and backward about the locked direction.

In ‘Follow me’ mode, the drone follows the controller and allows you to regulate for altitude: a good feature for taking selfies. Video transmission to the live feed on your phone is strong at shorter distances, but gets mangled at longer distances and is quite unintelligible at the maximum range of 50 meters. There is a high lag in video transmission of almost 2 seconds that becomes increasingly pronounced as the drone moves further away from you. With such a wide discrepancy in video transmission, it is in your best interest to keep in the drone in sight at all times.

However, the quality of the FPV is sufficient for performing low range tasks such as surveying your property or recording your children playing in the garden. The on- board camera is capable of capturing 720p HD video and taking 2MP stills which are pretty decent for a removable camera on a low-budget drone. The first thing you’ll notice about the Q500 if you’re a drone enthusiast is that it’s quite a bit bigger than all the DJI drones. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does pose a few problems regarding portability and maneuverability. The drone itself comes apart pretty easily and you can take down the legs and camera in a jiffy, but you will need a large bag or case to carry it in, so don’t expect to put this drone in a backpack for a quick trip to a nearby park.

The overall build quality of the drone is solid and sturdy. All components are made from high quality materials and provide good stability. It sports a mean aerodynamic look and exhibits sharp geometry akin to some pricier professional drones. On the overall, the Yuneec Q500 is quite a bit heavier and bulkier than its DJI counterparts, but offers a great flying experience nonetheless.

2. Flight Time and Intelligent Battery:-
According to the manual, a single battery provides up to 25 minutes of flight time, but this is rarely the case. After several enjoyable test flights and some intense flying sessions where we pushed the drone to test its agility, speed and camera, we found that on average the battery delivered between 20-22 minutes. As for charging, it takes nearly two hours to charge an empty battery which is quite disappointing, so expect to purchase at least 1 extra battery if you want to enjoy flying this drone without interruption.
3. Performance:-
The most compelling aspect of this Q500 drone is its performance. Its smart modes, in our experience, make it arguably one of the easiest drones to fly and get familiar with. The transmitter (which we’ll get to a minute) offers incredibly intuitive and responsive controls that make flying this aircraft extremely enjoyable. The smallest adjustments to the joysticks register in perfect harmony with the aircraft and maneuver it precisely in the direction you want it to go.

This aircraft comes equipped with 3 flight modes: smart, home and angle. The smart mode works a lot like a headless mode and is great for beginners who aren’t yet comfortable with flying relative to orientation of the aircraft’s nose. This mode uses the pilot’s position as a frame of reference and ensures that the drone only flies in the direction that the pilot wants it to regardless of the orientation of its nose. Angle mode is the exact opposite of smart mode and is suited to more experienced pilots who prefer to fly using the orientation of the drone’s nose.

Home mode signals the drone to fly back home, but with the Yuneec Q500 Typhoon, the return home function is much more dynamic than that. Instead of flying directly back to the pilot, this drone maintains a safe distance and lands roughly 13-15 ft away from the pilot to avoid a collision. In addition to the above modes, this quadcopter also comes with a dynamic ‘Follow-me’ mode and a ‘Watch me’ mode which are great for shooting video and photos. In ‘follow me’ mode the drone follows the controller pretty well while activating autonomous flight and maintains a distance of 20-25 feet. In ‘watch me’ mode, the drone focuses its camera solely on the pilot to take crisp and precise photos and video regardless of the manner in which it is maneuvered.

Let go of the controls, and the Q500 Typhoon simply hovers in place without a glitch owing to its superior in-built GPS functionality. Leaving aside intuitive controls, easy maneuverability and precision hovering capabilities, the one area that was somewhat disappointed us was the range. We found that while the drone could comfortably fly to roughly 1000 feet in an open and relatively unpopulated area, within the city and in nearby parks, it couldn’t go further than 600-700 feet without disconnecting. In comparison, to the range on the DJI Phantom 3, this does fall a little short but this Q500 more than compensates in all other aspects of flight performance.

4. Camera Quality :-
The Q500 Typhoon boasts a powerful 3-axis gimbal that is capable of delivering rock solid stability in the air so that you can make the most out the amazing on-board camera. The camera is capable of stunning 4K HD video and provides a wider field of view at 115 degrees than most consumer drones on the market.

In addition to shooting 4K HD video at 30fps, the camera also provides an option for 1080p capture at 120fps for incredible slow motion video as well as the ability to take breadth taking 12MP stills in RAW (DNG) and JPEG. Also, from the ST10+ controller you can make simple adjustments to camera angle allowing you to take a variety of different shots almost instantly.
